The 50th Anniversary Year will again have monthly live demonstrators, demonstrating various media and techniques. Our next regular meeting will be Tuesday, October 20th. The October artist will be Walt Davis, demonstrating watercolor.

Walt Davis, signature member and past president of the Southwestern Watercolor Society, began painting in watercolor over thirty years ago. He studied first with Faith Helen Foust at Eastfield Community College then with Bud Biggs. He later attended workshops with Doug Walton, Louise Cadillac, Carole Barnes, Frank Webb, Mark Mehaffey, Richard Stephens, and noted bird artist John P. O’Neil.

Davis has taught watercolor, figure drawing, and plein air sketching at Eastfield Community College, Amarillo College, Panhandle Art Center, San Angelo Museum of Art, and in his studio in Commerce. He has conducted demonstrations and workshops in Amarillo, Brownsville, Dallas, San Angelo and nine other Texas cities.

His work is carried by the Davis and Blevins Gallery in St. Jo, Texas, and his paintings hang in private collections in Washington State, Montana, Florida, Colorado, New Mexico, and cities throughout Texas. His work has been accepted into exhibitions of the American Watercolor Society, Southwestern Watercolor Society, Texas Watercolor Society, Richardson Civic Art Society, Greenville Art League, and Western Federation of Watercolor Societies. His painting, Katy-did, Katy-didn't, won the Margery Soroka Memorial Award in the 2013 American Watercolor Society competition in New York and was included in the Society’s traveling show.

Two other insect portraits won awards in 2014; one in the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies in Phoenix, Arizona, and the other in the Southwestern Watercolor Society show in Dallas. With the acceptance of the painting Make My Day in the 2015 annual exhibition of the American Watercolor Society, Davis became a signature member of that prestigious organization.

We have several Art Shows each season.

It all starts with our Membership Show in the Fall. Those members wanting to display their 2D work and compete for prizes are eligible to enter. Paintings hang in the 3rd Floor Gallery of the Richardson Public Library. A judge will select winning entries and awards which are handed out at the monthly meeting. The prospectus explains rules and guidelines for hanging. Most work is for sale and is a great opportunity to purchase local art.

In the Winter, our Young People’s Scholarship Show hangs in the 3rd Floor Gallery with representation from our talented Richardson high school students competing for cash awards.

Following the Young People’s Show is the Rosemary Cheney Memorial Art Show. This showcases the RISD Elementary students. Forty-one schools send their best art to be displayed in the Library’s 3rd Floor Gallery, with the show traveling to the RISD Professional Building for more viewing by the public.

The 50+ Show in the Spring gives “seasoned” artists a chance to display and compete for prize money and awards. This show is open to any 2D artists in the surrounding communities who are also over age 50. Sales of the artwork are encouraged. This is a great venue to purchase art pieces locally. The monthly meeting after the show hangs will present awards and prizes chosen by our judge. See the prospectus for rules and guidelines.

Our premier show is the Regional Juried Art Exhibition which is displayed at the Eisemann Center for the Performing Arts. This juried show is open to qualified amateur and professional Texas artists. Prize awards totaling over $6900.00 in cash and merchandise are presented at a reception honoring entrants and their families and friends. Refreshments and music are part of the festivities. Sales of the artwork are encouraged by patrons.

Our final show is a casual display of any artwork that members wish to hang in the 3rd Floor Gallery during the summer months. We call this our Simply Summer Show and Sale.

See below for details about any of our shows. To see photos from previous shows, go to the Archives page.
