MEETINGS & DEMONSTRATIONS

Our next RCAS meeting will be February 19, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. Location is the Richardson Public Library. The February Demo Artist will be Maribeth Jagger, demonstrating Alcohol Ink.

Maribeth Jagger has painted most of her adult life, having received her degree in art from Northwest Florida State University.

Her art reveals a great deal about her life and passions. Long, rolling country roads disappearing into the distance; lively colorful cottage gardens; quiet, pristine woods in the snow; or energetic close-ups of the majesty of nature: each painting conveys a feeling of joy and whimsy. Her art is a representation of the beauty she sees in the world around her as she reduces the subject to its most elemental and powerful components, and invites the viewer to step into that world.

She primarily works with alcohol inks as she feels they vibrate with a purity of color, fluidity and energy that’s hard to replicate with other mediums. "I love the vibrancy and spontaneity of alcohol inks. Much like watercolor, the inks can be controlled and manipulated, but I usually let them take the lead, then I'll jump in and manipulate them to develop my subject creating a balance between a loose fluidity and a tighter realistic subject which allows the viewer to complete the story and experience his own emotions."

Walt Davis and his work.

Walt Davis has taught drawing and watercolor painting for over thirty years. He is a past president and signature member of the Southwestern Watercolor Society and has won numerous awards in regional art competitions. In 2012, his painting, Insectarium, was selected for the American Watercolor Society Annual Show in New York. His 2013 painting, Katy-did, Katy-didn't, won the AWS Margery Soroka award and was selected for the AWS traveling show that year, and with a third acceptance this year he became a signature member of the organization. Davis especially enjoys introducing beginning students to the wonders of watercolor through a combination of instruction, demonstration, practice, and constructive feedback in a positive and supportive atmosphere.

Walt Davis worked at the Dallas Museum of Natural History Museum for 25 years and was director of the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum for 12 years. His experience building wildlife dioramas and leading field trips to various parts of the state provide him with a wealth of material for paintings. According to Davis, "Nature is the ultimate designer, using soil and rock, water and plants to create beautiful places following the laws of nature. Watercolor, applied according to the elements and principles of design, is a beautiful medium for artistic expression. My challenge as an artist is to coax the potential of the medium into revealing the beauty and complexity of the subject."
